One of the more fascinating start-ups Terranova Global has seen in a long time is Oruga from Riga, Latvia. It's a rather unique single-track all-terrain-vehicle. Indeed, you will "NOT" have seen one of these before. There are three wheels with massive balloon tires inside a proprietary monotrack system, a big battery and an electric motor with oodles of grunt. The Oruga is designed for non-expert ease-of-use in very rugged conditions: very steep hills, snow, mud, sand.

THIS IS THE ORUGA UNITRACK AND WE WANT ONE

Adventure bikes don’t get any more adventure-y than this! It’s called the Oruga Unitrak, and it might just be the coolest and wildest bike of 2024.

It’s been designed by a Latvian team which is claiming the bike to be the world’s first “all-terrain e-monotrack” - or at least it will be when it goes into production in 2025. As you can guess from the ‘e’ in e-monotrack, the bike is electric-powered, although the press release accompanying it mentions hybrid. Whether that’s as a range-extending hybrid, where a petrol or diesel engine helps to keep the batteries topped up, or as a traditional hybrid, where the internal combustion engine powers the wheels track, remains to be seen. Oruga is in the process of building the first example which will be fully electric and in keeping with the brand's ethos of a machine that is green, innovative and sustainable.

Powering the machine is a 90kW (circa 120bhp) motor, which is quite a lot of power for an electric bike. We expect the torque figure to be even more impressive and with two versions on offer (Nude - 150kg and Heavyweight - 300kg) it will likely need some chunky low-end grunt.

A claimed range of the machine is either 62 miles if fully electric or 124 miles if using the hybrid technology. It's claimed that it's going to have a top speed of around 60mph, although top-speed on a bike like this is kind of irrelevant!

It is, though, the design of the track that gives this bike its genuine go-anywhere ability, not the motor or battery, as with a much larger contact patch than a traditional adventure bike or off-roader, it will have a lot more traction and grip. Because of this, the team behind the Unitrack notes it will be capable of handling sand, deep mud, rocky climbs and snow.

Traditional motorcycles struggle with all those areas, which gives this kind of machine an edge and possibly attractive to those who work within inhospitable regions. Running on electric power also means it should be quiet and therefore less likely to disturb wildlife.

Terranova Global is looking to bring Oruga manufacturing to Canada to build the future motorcycle that no outdoor enthusiast can do without. We are looking for a variety of funding and financial partners to make this available throughout North America for both combative and non-combative advancements that will allow users for Search & Rescue, Public Safety, Emergency Operations, Communications Deployment, Delivery to hard to reach places and much more.

One of the more fascinating start-ups we’ve seen in a long time is Oruga and it's rather unique single-track all-terrain-vehicle. Indeed, you will NOT have seen one of these before. There are three wheels with massive balloon tires inside a proprietary monotrack system, a big battery and an electric motor with oodles of grunt. The Oruga is designed for non-expert ease-of-use in very rugged conditions: very steep hills, snow, mud, sand.

Oruga SIA is a Mobility Tech startup established in Latvia in the summer of 2023, with the Oruga name derived from the Spanish word for caterpillar. The company’s point of difference is its proprietary patent-pending monotrack technology and the company intends to develop and manufacture products “designed to conquer diverse challenging terrains: from hot sand and muddy forests to rocky climbs and snowy landscapes.”

Clearly there are more applications of the monotrack technology that we have yet to see and understand, so we reached out to the Oruga team, and apparently the track is designed to bend on the sections of the contact point of the lower front wheel when you steer, giving the bike a rather wide turning radius of around 6 meters. Even with the Unitrack's ability to drive in reverse making maneuvering in tight spots a little less physically demanding, the huge turning radius will limit where it can be taken, and with all that extra weight on the front end (it's the first steering system we've seen that turns a wheel that's a foot off the ground), I'm tipping it will handle very differently to the featherweight, exquisitely suspended forks of a thoroughbred dirt bike that most motorcyclists would prefer when they are seeking front-end traction to keep it all sunny-side-up.

One other rather obvious missing feature required if you do intend to push the boundaries of where the Unitrack might take you, is grab handles - strong points on each corner of a motorcycle where a hand or line can be attached to coax this thing out of difficult spots.

The full capabilities and the numbers behind the Oruga Unitrack are still unknown, but it clearly has some advantages over the 200cc four-stroke that it offers an eco-conscious tool for paramedics, first responders and the military. Ecological responsibility is not of paramount concern for the military, but the off-road mobility offered by the Oruga Unitrack is also completely silent.

Terranova Global is the organization you need to bring your technology to market. Let us do the heavy lifting so that you can do what is more important and that is to build your legacy, then we can develop and grow together.
